My friend Liz told me that the Tube Map was one of the many design icons up for a vote in the quest to find "Britain's Best Loved Design Icon". Harry Beck's map sits alongside other classic British icons such as the Routemaster bus, the A-Z, the Penguin paperback, the Mini (both skirt and car), the Raleigh chopper, the Dr Marten's boot and strangely enough the World Wide Web, Tomb Raider and the Dyson vacuum cleaner.
Of the London Underground Map the Design Museum said: "Harry Beck's map has created such a powerful impression that it dominates our perceptions of London's geography. A variation of his original design is still used by London Underground today, and Beck's concept of a diagrammatic map has been imitated all over the world." As we saw in Mark Ovenden's and Max Robert's fascinating talks on the subject.
